We take an
early bus out of Antigua and head to Lago de Atitlán. We arrive in Panajachel,
a small town at the lake, and embark on a small boat. The lake is really
beautiful and the Volcano of Atitlán makes it really special. Although we must
say, our lakes in Switzerland are at least as beautiful ;-)
At Lago de
Atitlán there are several smaller and bigger villages to stay at. We decide to
stay in San Marcos and as it turns out, it was a good choice for us. It’s
really small and relaxed and has no traffic – actually the lower part of the
village consists of only two small walking trails! After checking in at our
hostel we enjoy the first sunset.
The next
day we decide to check out some other villages at the lake. Here we are now in
San Pedro, which is much bigger than San Marcos. But as the boat rides are
really expensive, we decide to let be with San Pedro. So far we like Guatemala,
but tourism is really canalized (most probably because of safety reasons) and therefor prices are very high compared to the other
countries in Central America. Lots of gringos everywhere (us including)!
On our last
day at the lake, we visit Cerro Tzankujil right next to San Marcos. Here, there
are several miradores (viewing points) and a sacred Maya site with great views.
But
the highlight is the swimming spots! The water is crystal clear and there also
is a spring platform – 10 metres of altitude!! We’re happy to say that we did
both jump :-) Incredible, especially with those views and perfect water!
Then it’s
time to say goodbye to this great lake – we’re heading back to Antigua for 2 nights.
A last great shot in the morning!
