After some
lovely days in Ataco and El Salvador, we enter Guatemala! Here we are having
some coffee at the border. The dollar-coins are useless outside of El Salvador,
so we spend all of our last cents :-)
The border
crossing again was very easy. From there we take a bus to Guatemala City and
transfer on to Antigua. It’s Saturday and there’s lots of traffic and people everywhere.
Antigua seems to be very popular among local and international tourists and we
struggle to find a hostal with available rooms. Luckily we still find one –
very basic, but hey, a room is a room and a bed is a bed!
Antigua
really is a beautiful, colonial city and we’re not the first to find out. We’re
amazed by the amount of tourists! It really shows in the international
restaurants and hotels, and in the prices, too. Still, it’s lovely to stroll
around and there’s a lot of city action going on.
Christmas
is coming!
We start
the next day with a yummie local breakfast and go explore the city – lots of
nice spots and ruins.
Antigua is
surrounded by several volcanoes and they’re really beautiful in the light just
before sunset.
