Angkor Day II

Day 2 starts really early - our tuktuk picks us up at 4.45 am in order to be at Angkor Wat for sunrise. We are really excited and get there on time for a good spot. We're lucky as it's low season and there are not as many tourists there as usual. What a great experience it is to witness the sunrise at Angkor Wat!

Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, with the site measuring 162.6 hectares. It is an architectonical masterpiece not only optically, but for it’s challenging surrounding: It’s built on a swamp on an artificial island and has to brave nature, the extreme dry season and the monsoon. Originally, it was constructed as a Hindu temple of god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire, gradually transforming into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.

Also the interior of the temple is very amazing and unique...

You can even climb up to the elevated platform and enjoy some great views...

The carvings are phenomenal...

Yeah, monks and monkeys also dig to hang around the temple :-)

Next stop is Bayon, built slightly later than Angkor Wat. While Angkor Wat is a Hindu temple, Bayon is a Buddhist temple...

Here we are "on the road" with our tuktuk and the driver Mr. Ben :-)

Chau Say

Thommanom

Ta Keo

Ta Prohm - very unique temple as nature literally took over. Also, it is famous as scenes for the movie "Tomb Raider" with Angelina Jolie were shot here...

The "famous" tree from the movie...

Last, but not least on day 2: Banteay Kdei
