After Mai Chau our long distance goal is to reach Sa Pa. But as it is, the route is the goal. That means we first travel to Son La. Son La is pretty unknown as a touristic spot. That also means that there is not too much to do as a tourist in Son La. Well, great food, a big market and some nightlife. As there are almost no tourists, it is not always clear what is the attraction: the city for us or we for the city... :) They wave at us, kids shout out hello and chuckle and everybody checks us up.

After a night in Son La we take the bus again. Another seven hours to Lai Chau. The bus ride again is quite ok as it isn't too full. And the landscape is just great.

Here we are in Lai Chau. The same storie as in in Son La. No tourists and we become the attraction. At the restaurant at night the men from the other tables come to ours to clink glasses (tiny schnapps glasses) with Alfredo. Liquor and tobacco is mainly a man's business.
Here you see the restaurant where all took place ;) The lighted house at the right is our hotel.

PS: Lai Chau is the hottest region in Vietnam because of the winds from Laos. Well, at the moment we've been there it wasn't hot at all (ca. 20°C).
