Happy New Year everybody! We had a nice and quite New Year's Eve in La Concha. Then Christina had to leave already and the two of us headed back to León. Here's our favourite lunch restaurant :-)
We headed back to León because we planned an epic Volcano trip... There are many volcanoes around León and we wanted to climb them all ;) - and we did 5 of them!!! San Cristóbal - Telica - El Hoyo - Cerro Negro - Momotombo - all active!!! 4 Days, 3 nights, 24 hours of walking and 3000m altitude to hike up and down... We luckely found a guide that was willing to do this trip with us :-) Fully packed with our tent, food and a lot of drinking water, the trip could begin...
Volcano 1 was San Cristóbal, the highest and thoughest volcano in Nicaragua... 1748m altitude and steep as can be! But first things first: we got stock on the dirt road, our guide was not the best driver, hehe :-)
We left the car and luckely some friendly people from a finca nearby got the car out while we were trekking... Here everything is still fine...
What apears to be the peek of the Volcano actually was not it... It just always went on as the peak was surrounded by clouds and gases... which we only realized arriving at the top :-)
The rocky sand was full of dust as you can see...
The smile is temporally gone as ther wind got stronger, the way steeper and we were sweating more and more... the conditions were really hard - one step ahead meant sliding down two steps because of the sand and inclination of 45 degrees...
After the 2 hours downhill run a look back at this incredible volcano... we were exhausted... and there was still a second volcano awaiting for the night...
Almost there! A strong 2:15 hours hike and beautiful vegetation...
Here it is, LAVA!! As we got closer to the crater, there was this loud, roaring, sizzling sound - purgatory??? Unique experience!
Then we walked back the same way - but at night! We crossed some scorpions and snakes and heard lots of undefined sounds... Spooky!! What a first day!!! We walked for almost 11 hours...

But we finally did it after 4 hours!!! The crater could not be seen due to the clouds and gases... and it was really cold up there! The fun part now was getting down again! :]

Volcano number two - on the same day - was Telica (1061m altitude). After lunch and some well needed rest we started this one in the late afternoon. Nica cows are never far away :-)
The volcano Telica is famous because at night you can see the lava in its crater... We were excited!!!
You see the peak of Telica at the left...
